MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTATION IN IMAGING
SCIENCE AND INFORMATION PROCESSING
Rapid advances in communication, sensing and computational power have led to an explosion of data. The usefulness of this resource for human knowledge is determined by its accessibility and portability. The size and varied formats of these datasets present fresh challenges to existing techniques in terms of transmission, storage, querying, display and numerical manipulation. As a result, a lot of research has been conducted on computer-aided techniques to develop new technologies for data representation. The efficient and robust methods for data representation are essential for storage, communication, display, scientific analysis and computation of digital information. This requires new theories and new methods in the areas of approximation, imaging science, information processing, mathematical modeling, scientific computing and statistics.
The purpose of this program is to conduct multidisciplinary studies involving mathematical perspectives and foundation of imaging science and information processing. In particular, the program emphasizes on the applications in imaging science and information processing of the recent developments in the areas of approximation and wavelet theory, numerical analysis and scientific computing, and statistical and data analysis. The focus will be on the following themes.
Ideal data representations: Multiscale decompositions arrange data into strata reflecting their relative importance. This allows for rapid access to good coarse resolution of the data while retaining the flexibility for increasingly fine representations. It leads to algorithms that give sparse and accurate representations of image, medical image, acoustic and high-dimensional data, as well as geometric objects, for efficient computation, analysis, storage and communication.
Computational methods in imaging science: Numerical partial differential equation and linear algebra model, simulate and provide computational methods to various physical problems in signal and image processing, multimedia communication, computer aided design, and scalable data representation for modeling, simulation and visualization.

The Institute for Mathematical Sciences invites applications for membership for participation in the above program. Limited funds to cover travel and living expenses are available to young scientists. Applications should be received at least six (6) months before the commencement of membership.
